All that leftist socialist beliefs. Archos does not seek french gvt investment in their business. What the ownerswill are much more scared about is that Mr Holland new French psdt will tax all the French with higher revenues and belongings. 45% on middle class and 75% upper middle classe on incomes from 25/40% during Sarkozy. Every year 1.8% on possessions. LOL ! This is communism !
The French christians voted at 60% for Sarkozy, the muslims, recent immigrants from Africa, voted at 93% for Holland. The French of french origin voted at 55% for Sarkozy, those including the atheists who voted for Holland at 66% and the Brittons who voted at 55% for Holland. Someone working on polls also admitted that immigrants from sub saharan Africa are voting at more than 90% for Holland whatever they are muslims or christians...
Mr Melechon,Holland communist ally wants France to become an enemy of the US, Russia and Northern Europe, not to pay Frances debt and to get out of the UE and make a new Union with all the Arab and African countries, communist countries from south America and ally China against the US. This guy only got 11% because his supporters felt it was more useful to vote Holland to help beat Sarkozy.

France under Sarkozy was corrupt and moronic, has absolutely nothing to do with the technology investments coming with Francois Hollande in the weeks and months to come. High-tech jobs is the number 1 priority for Francois Hollande. Boring and crappy manufacturing jobs are not the future of France. The future is technological innovation, export, technological domination over the USA, Asia is France's only hope.

sorry stock price matters for them. look at the PACEO they voted. the money from the capital increase they will get is directly linked to the stock price.. so yes it matters a lot (they can't go back to the market for funding, the investors from last years who paid roughly 8 euros a share (with the 5 DPS) are very sorry at the moment....

and reminds me Hollande... what did he buy for his region Correze ? 9000 iPads... right...

Challenge is that pouring plenty of money on Archos won't bring manufacturing jobs in france and this is what a government wants - so it won't happen. (also I remind you the FSI wanted to invest in Archos only if Crohas would leave the CEO role... so french government strategic fund is not so supportive of the management there...)

You really have a problem with this French innovator of a company. Archos stock going up or down 2 Euros in price value is a bunch of peanuts. Archos is valued 5000 times lower than Apple. It's a small cap. The definition of small cap is that the investors have no idea what the company is about. It's a bunch of investors only looking for a quick stock market gain, it has absolutely no influence on the activities of the company. Archos financials are super healthy, they are hiring, they are making a profit, they are growing and most importantly of all, they are standby for dominating on the tablet and other emerging consumer electronics segments which Archos unlike any other small, medium or big technology companies in Europe is the only company to actually have a potential to make things happen in the world of European to Worldwide technology. Francois Hollande just got elected, so my guess is you can be standby for announcements of major investments in French technology companies with potential for growth, which means France most likely will provide Archos with very low interest loans of as large volume as they want. Thus Archos can probably have access to extremely large capital very soon if they care to expand rapidly, if Archos board of directors decide that it'll be interesting to try to become a major worldwide force in electronics to not just dominate in terms of value against Apple and Samsung, but also to challenge those in terms of market share and revenue and not just in tablets but in all aspects of consumer electronics. I think Archos is more than happy to accept the challenge. But they don't have to. They are being perfectly healthy continuing business as usual and simply not using extra external resources even with the encouragement of the Government with some new low interest loans, investments, university collaboration, Government orders (such as tablets for students) etc.

Ouch - Q1 numbers sucks and they are issuing a profit warning already... So much for charbax darling...

The stock has tanked 50% in the last 4 weeks. The company had a nice run with the money of the shareholder but just can't survive building crappy products no one is buying...

So long archos... May be if you had been better at innovation, sales, marketing, communication and understood you need margin to survive, may be you would have made it...

ouch... stock is crashing.. lost 50% in the recent weeks... something is going on there. company is not doing as well as Charbax is saying.

I had a look at the FY11 report

http://www.archos.com/corporate/investors/financial_doc/Rapport_financier_2011.pdf

the available stock at the end of december was 34,2m euros. this is the production value. taking into account 20% gross margin estimated by Archos and you get 42,75m euros the revenue Archos could have generated from the sale of the full stock.

As the revenue in Q1 was below this number, Archos did not sell everything they had in stock at the end of december, and not a single product they could have manufactured during Jan/Feb/March...

so your statement that they can sell all they produce is plain wrong.

sorry.

may be that's why they are being killed in the stock market ?

Lol - the fanboy talks again. It's refreshing to see so much "naïveté" I think you say in french...

Archos is loosing market share. they were #2 close to samsung in Q4 they are now #3 so samsung kept growing...

You have no clue on the stock sold or unsold - it's not in the press release. this being said if you look at their stock statement at the end of the year, and the revenue in Q1 then you can easily see they did not sell everything they had - actually quite far from this.

Margin is collapsing badly... it was 16% in H2 2011 and they say the climate is getting worse... how sustainable can that be...

and when you say:

"Archos is the only place in Europe where such R&D can happen"

I doubt it because they just don't have the money to do so... and it won't happen in Europe but it's happening now in California with iOS, with Android... and asia with Samsung and the others....

archos is just a cheap assembly company with very limited possibilities...

they are going belly up... too bad they were fun to watch...

just the wrong leader in the company, willing to ship something half baked just to be first or prove a point... when the market cares in innovation for something that works, which is joyful .. Apple gets that, they don't rush to market.. they ship the right product at the right time.. that's the difference and what has made over the past 10 years (Apple was near bankruptcy) one company a loser (chapter 11 in 2012 ??) and the other one the largest company in the world...

just a reality check here...

You have no idea what you are talking about. Archos is the number 3 tablet seller in Europe still. The only reason they haven't progressed further was that lots of other tablet makers have been cutting on prices of their older models to clear unsold stocks, a bit like the HP TouchPad being unstocked at $99, no tablet seller is supposed to compete with that. And that some parts of the high-end consumers have been locked on looking at the new ipad in March. Also Archos had an excellent Q1 2011 comparatively to Q4 2010 when comparing with a year later.

That does not change from the fact that Archos easily sells everything that they produce. Archos does not have any unsold stock. And as the new awesome super cheap ICS tablets are getting possible, Archos also is positioned to be a leader in that.

An increase in worldwide tablet innovation is only a positive for Archos, they are the original tablet inventor, they can out-innovate anyone else trying, regardless of sizes of R&D invested, regardless how much of the ecosystem is free and open source, Archos can position itself in a way to capture always increasing parts of the market as tablets are the fastest growing consumer electronics category.

Tablets are not just some random consumer device, it's the device of the future. Not just touching of screens, but upgrading productivity, upgrading business, upgrading education, upgrading information processing, upgrading people's interaction with the world, the tablets we see today are just a very early example of the types of user interfaces that become possible with the combining of ARM Processors and all the sensors and the Internet connection. Archos is the only place in Europe where such R&D can happen to provide for such huge potential for growth, such huge potential for shaping the future of the planet. We're talking improving lives, augmented reality, robots, making the world a better place for everyone, the applications and the importance of this is huge.

Ouch -so much for the fanboy.. Q1 results are out and they are really bad. Company only grew 8% and announced slow down and impact on margin. So much for the growth of 50 to 100% they were supposed to have !

That also proves you totally wrong when you stated that archos could sell everything they produce and if someone were to give them 1 billion then they would sell more than apple... LOL what a blow,.. They could not sell it all and we're challenged on price by the competition... The iPod story is coming back, this time they will be dead in water - no one will give them any money anymore

You should get ready to start another

Archos is using thousands of those slaves as you call them (and outside any control nor reporting on work conditions).. It s just plain impossible... Go out there in a factory...

Charbax - what is your definition of a Tablet ? All the discussion below seems to be based on your viewing anything with a touch screen as a tablet

For IDC Gartner and the likes ONLY the G8, G9 and Arnova G1 and G2 (and what they manufactured under someone else name in Arnova and distributed WW) are to be taken into account.

Not the small Internet tablet nor the eReader not the Vision products qualify.... Seems you are counting those in your math...

Calling your bluff on that one - its easy to make such claims and not document anything.

Give us 5 - just 5 - links for different sizeable deals where archos has been chosen instead of iPad or Galaxy... Just 5 out of the thousands...

My bet is that there are ZERO - NONE - ZIP sizeable deals that are documented (1 rumor in Brasil that never came thru).

I don't think ereaders are in any data from IDC, gartner, GFK etc... They have their own category...

Sorry get your facts or you should also count the other ones....

Yeah that is exactly the BS I thought you would post... But sorry in 2010 there was no android tablet from archos (except Q4) so the revenue in Q1 to Q3 was only media players and other stuff... Looking at a year on year ratio just does not make sense...

Also look at the quarter on quarter revenue During 2011 - the revenue did not grow really just stayed steady in Q1 to Q3 and got a spike in Q4 due to Christmas. So if the market was growing for android in 2011 and their sales stayed flat in quarter after quarter it means they were losing market share... Just look at the numbers of iPad sales in Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4... The number kept increasing because there was more market demand. A flat revenue means no growth, just steady sales - so loosing market share in a market which grew...

According to reports I can find all the correze 6th and 5th graders got an iPad last year and this year That is more than 6000 iPads deployed - not a single archos.

There is plenty of evidence on the net... My French is not perfect but pretty easy to see with google translate.

So looks like you are not telling the truth on that one....

What a heck are you talking aboug! Archos sales more than doubled every quarter y/y, and average tablet price lowered which means they more than doubled shipments. Tablet market doubled ergo Archos grows faster than the market. A company doesnt need to profit quarterly to be very healthy. The company can reinvest all profit in growth, hiring, faster r and d and espacially larger production volume.

Charbax you said: "Archos profits are very healthy for a company with less than 250 employees, that is if you compare the profit/revenues per employee compared to every other tablet company mentioned, even Apple."

This is actually interesting. Can a company so big than Apple drive more productivity, revenue and profit per head than a startup growing at a 106% rate YoY?
So I did the math. here are the numbers.in calendar year 2011 (to compare with Archos):For Apple:REVENUE;- Q1 2011: $24,7B
- Q2 2011: $28,6B
- Q3 2011: $28,3B
- Q4 2011: $46,3B
TOTAL = $127,9B

NET PROFIT:
- Q1 2011: $6,0B
- Q2 2011: $7,3B
- Q3 2011: $6,6B
- Q4 2011: $13,1BTOTAL = $33BAccording to Apple latest 10K, as of September 24, 2011, the Company had approximately 60,400 full-time equivalent employees.Revenue per head: $2,12mProfit per head: $546,000if we do the math for Archos.we know the revenue for CY 2011; 171,4m EUR. Today FxRate is at 1,35 so this is roughly $231,4mRevenue per head: $925kWe don't know the profit. they did euros 1,7m for S1 2011 let's assume 7 million Euros for 2011 that is $9,45m in USDProfit per head: $37,800conclusion; Apple drives 2,3x more revenue per head than Archos and 14,4x more profit per head...Ouch.... so much for your baby doll... (but they did well nevertheless)

Hello Charbax - regarding your comment about the French next president I googled him and found this video form November 2011

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39e74CzZAZk

I'm not so good at French but my understanding is that he is saying that he is giving every 6th grader in his district the best tool possible to enter modern digital age and this tool is ... An iPad....

So does he even know Archos exist ? he is running for president and is convinced iPad is the best tool and spent millions of dollars in public funding to purchase iPads and you think he will support archos after that??

This is puzzling French politics,,, :-)

Sorry your numbers don't add up.... You should double check your facts...

Apple has roughly 70,000 employee and if you align same quarters as archos (calendar year) close to $140 billions in revenue. So apple drives $2 million per employee at a nice 30% net margin or so

You say archos has 250 employee and drove $220 million in revenue - so that is less than 1 million per head (twice less than apple) and their GROSS margin is around 20% so you can imagine profitability close to 4% net net....

Apple beats them hands down on both accounts.... Sorry...

Apple has roughly 70,000 employee and if you align same quarters as archos (calendar year) close to $140 billions in revenue. So apple drives $2 million per employee at a nice 30% net margin or so

You say archos has 250 employee and drove $220 million in revenue – so that is less than 1 million per head (twice less than apple) and their GROSS margin is around 20% so you can imagine profitability close to 4% net net….

Apple beats them hands down on both accounts…. Sorry…

Also - they are not growing market share faster than anyone else... Come on ! We all agree that the android tablet market has grown at least x2 in 2011 and look at archos numbers - they are totally flat in Q1, Q2, Q3 and they get the seasonal Christmas bump in Q4. But Q1 to Q3 they show no growth - they are not capturing ANY growth in the market - they stay flat - SO THEY LOST MARKET SHARE BIG WAY!!!

(And please don't serve me the BS that they did grow x2 compared to 2010 so they grew as fast as the market.. We all know that in Q1 to Q3 2010 they were NOT selling tablet - so the growth is irrelevant, it's just comparing their dying media player market with a better market (tablets) where they had a nice run but nothing as you put it)

They did well for a small company - they are in the top 10 WW probably - which is already an achievement - and we will see the net profit in the coming days and I bet it's going to be less than 10 million dollars for the whole year...

2 million what? if you Call à Tablet à 2 inch media player - sure they are probably approaching this number overall (that is part of the other product they sell) - but then be also realistic and count media players from Samsung Sony etc....

If you go by the definition of tablet GFK, IDC, GARTNER etc use then the number is probably very close to what I describe.

Archos sold closer to 2 million tablets in 2011 than your number. Archos is beating Samsung, Asus, Acer, Motorola, Dell, Toshiba, and everyone else. In many of the most important worldwide markets. Archos is growing their market share and sales faster than the overall tablet market which is already one of the fastest growing markets. Archos has closer to 3% global tablet market share than your number, they have way above that if you disregard tablets sold above $400/400 euro. Archos profits are very healthy for a company with less than 250 employees, that is if you compare the profit/revenues per employee compared to every other tablet
company mentioned, even Apple.

Hey, read the data and be honest...

- it's not Europe, it's only 7 countries in Europe. (what GFK calls Europe 7). Archos is mainly selling in those countries, so this is favorable because they are mostly not represented elsewhere (and all the other players do sell in other countries).
- the sub €400 markets includes all the product lines from Archos compared to a fraction of what other sell. Look at the global business before drawing conclusions

- the numbers are actually pathetic. Archos has a big chunk of it revenue in these 7 countries. Once you remove all the crap devices the sell (media players, radio, smart homephone) besides the G8 and G9 and Arnova - revenue is probably 100 millions euros in Tablet sales. They probably get 200 euros for each Archos and 120 for each Arnova - let's say a blended 160 euros. so they sold roughly 625,000 tablets worldwide in 2011. this is low. this is really low... According to IDC and Gartner the market was between 63 and 67 millions units - so they have less than 1% market share...

- we know you are a big fan, but don't twist the reality. They are small, they are loosing market share (I think you are the one who advertised 20% market share at the end of 2010 in France for all tablet market), their revenue is a rounding error in Samsung or Apple profit (not even revenue)... just be realistic, they are going away as competition on price will get them out of their niche in 2012

I'm the owner of the worlds biggest unofficial Archos forum at http://forum.archosfans.com since 2005, and I'm probably the worlds biggest Archos fanboy since 2001. And it's the reason I'm an ARM fanboy cause Archos has always been using the latest and best ARM processors vs the Intel MID and other Intel failure.

It's GfK, go read up on them http://www.gfk.com/ one of the largest market research companies in the world. They go to all the resellers and ask them how much they sell of each tablet and they have stated that Archos is the number 2 top selling Tablet brand in Europe, closely tied with Samsung, all the other tablet makers are behind. Archos is the number 1 sub-400 euro tablet maker/seller in Europe.

If you want to hear my guesstimation, is that I think there is a good chance Archos is number 2 sub-$300 tablet maker in the USA, in front of Nook, Acer, Asus and any other pretending to sell sub-$300 tablets on the US market. It's possible Archos is number 1 or close to number 1 for the $200-$300 or/and $200-$400 tablet market in the USA. On the other hand, the numbers show Archos US growth has not been as fast as it could have been, far from not as fast of a growth as in Europe and Asia, so it's possible some Nook or some other price-dumped tablet alternative from Acer, HP, RIM or other briefly overtook Archos in that market, but for Q1 2012, Archos is well positioned to take a large chunk of that $100-$400 tablet market.

So basically, you are lying.
Your title says Archos sells more than Asus and Acer yet you have no numbers to back it up.

You are jus making assumptions, conjecture, and guestimating.

At 100€ per tablet it's 1.7 million tablets for the year.

The source is Archos themselves, Archos knows the numbers of tablets and are likely to announce at their event on March 14th in Paris, where they also annonce profits and some other things about their strategy. Archos number of tablets sold and orders placed by resellers but not yet shipped (because of the processor delays and lack of cash to mass manufacture and ship before December 31st 2011 according to demand) may be about 2 million tablets for Archos in 2011. That's double the amount of tablets Archos sold in 2010.

Archos quotes analysts such as GfK which is one of the top analysts firms counting consumer electronics sales in Europe. Samsung themsleves have said in the media that Archos is selling more tablets than them in France. Archos also quotes Gartner when talking about the 2012 prediction of the tablets market probably more than doubling compared to 2011.

You are still making conjectures. Where are the numbers? If they aren't publish, we are all speculating.

Even at an average selling price of 100€ , it would only be 1,179,000 units for the entire year in Europe. That is not that impressive.

Archos isn't either available in Danish stores either. When Archos gets more cash, they can manufacture more of those tablets and they can sell them in more stores worldwide.

Where are you getting your # unit sold numbers?

Assume all their income was from 400 euro tablets @
171,4 million euros yearly revenues the most optimistic figure is
428500 units sold worldwide which does NOT sound impressive.
