Google's revenue share with manufacturers and carriers may be somewhat secret. They share advertising revenues with carriers, that is for certain. And Google has made a big deal talking about friction-free app payments through the carriers as something they are implementing, that can't be without revenue share with the carrier.

Can you give pointers about "Google provides the carrier with a share from app sales in the Google Marketplace." I'm really not sure about that !

My Android 2.1 smartphone from Huawei (Vodafone 845) is available in Germany for 99 EUR. I also have a Sim-card from o2-netzclub with free voice calls, free sms texting and a free data plan. Thats pretty cheap.

Charbax, I immensely enjoy your optimism and your love for tech to reach the masses. In the final analysis, that's one thing I can vouch google has done in making android free to use. It'll enable the smartphone - and by extension, mobile tech/internet - accessible to the masses. If they earn revenue through that good for them, they deserve it. Mind you some of that is already happening elsewhere, Here in the UK, you can get an Orange SanFrancisco 3.5" OLED/TFT capacitive android phone for £99, unlock it for £0.99 and pop in any data plan of your choice from £10 a month ( think giffgaff), this may already be happening in far larger scales in asia. I still feel the aim of technology is vain if it doesn't benefit the maximum number of people. It's an exercise in foolishness to create luxury tech products that only pander to the rich.
