I've been wondering why Google didn't choose ARM in the first place. My best guess is that Google's upcoming WebM / VP8 format has hardware acceleration support promised by numerous big names but is currently nonexistent. In order for GoogleTV to be ready for 1080p WebM content, they were forced to pick Intel Atom chips and do the decoding in software until hardware acceleration becomes available. The problem is that Atom-powered netbooks have had a hard time decoding 1080p h.264 video so why would WebM be any different?
