The gadget is dead a year ago. You say it’s still with with Android 2.1? Heh, even its Momma Toshiba didn’t like its child — right from the beginning. Affordable price for this thing for DIYers is below $120.

Toshiba AC100 is really one of the great smartbook available in market. Some cons of this smartbook are Android 2.1 while 2.3 is 2 month old in market. And no flash and Android market support. Other specification of this smartbook really awesome and price is really affordable.

Fail. The move to tablets is squeezing out netbooks. Removing the keyboard is not an improvement for my use case.

Lots of stuff is missing as if Toshiba lives in 2009 still. Sure, prototypes for this particular model must be dated 2008, so let's wait for _really_ breakthrough device. Which MUST show:
1) Liquavista, or Pixel Qi transflective ultra-hires IPS display, cap/res multitouch PLUS electromagnetic (Wacom digitizer style) stylus input;
2) Tegra 2 SoC is capable of supporting 12 MP digital still camera and/or full 1080p 120+ fps full lifeview video recorder, why oh why you Tosh went for that piss poor, KIRFy 1.3 MP Web cam?
3) It's very advantageous to have multiboot avenues open, or aneasily hackable device, at least before Android 3.0 matures, sure. Or Chrome OS catches. But I'd be not betting on Ubuntu/Canonical alone, any distro with better Tegra 2 hardware support will do fine, or better. Windows CE/7 for Tablets? In other words, the productivity apps is what wins over the stuff that is predominately smartphone, or media/data consumption based.
4) Make all the above into a Tablet PC form, or plain tablet (without hardware keyboatd), and you've got a true iPad killer on your hands. Is there anything here too hard to understand, or implement? Obviously, Tosh has a much better access to a plentiful supply of Tegra 2 than say, that obscure Notion Ink gang, why not use it?

Ubuntu would be a complete win on this system. Of course, I won't bite until I get at least 8h battery life. Here's hoping that manufacturers capitalize on the low power consumption of modern ARM cores.

It'd be very interesting to see what web browser they have, if it got tabs optimized for laptop form factor, how Android customizations are different than what HP did on the HP Compaq Airlife 100 that is out only in Spain or something like that. I don't know if Toshiba allows to multi-boot into Ubuntu or Chrome OS using an SD card or USB stick, that is to be seen, and that depends on what kind of boot process they use.
